Description
Launched in 2007, the Canada's Greenest Employers competition is organized by the editors of the Canada's Top 100 Employers project. This special designation recognizes the employers that lead the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness in their organizations. These employers have developed exceptional earth-friendly initiatives -- and are attracting people to their organizations because of their environmental leadership. This award grew out of two remarkable speeches given by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Former US Vice-President Al Gore at the annual conference on the Canada's Top 100 Employers project in 2006 and 2007. Prior to 2009, this award was called "Canada's Most Earth-Friendly Employers." Read the press release announcing our 2010 winners issued on April 22, 2010.
Selection Process
Each employer is evaluated by the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers in terms of: (1) the unique environmental initiatives and programs they have developed; (2) the extent to which they have been successful in reducing the organization's own environmental footprint; (3) the degree to which their employees are involved in these programs and whether they contribute any unique skills; and (4) the extent to which these initiatives have become linked to the employer's public identity and whether they attract new people to the organization.
Reasons for Selection
The Canada's Greenest Employers competition is an editorial project, which means that you can read our editors' Reasons for Selection by clicking on each winner in the column at right. We publish these reasons to provide transparency in the selection of winners and to raise the bar, encouraging other employers to follow the worthy initiatives we have chronicled.

Our exclusive newspaper partner on this competition is The Globe and Mail, which published an extended editorial feature on this year's winners on April 22, 2010 (Earth Day). We are delighted to be working with the Globe's editorial team on this year's competition.
Eligibility Requirements
Any employer operating in Canada may apply for this competition. Employers of any size may apply, whether private or public sector.
Date of Event
Next year's winners will be announced shortly before Earth Day in April 2011.
How to Apply
Employers apply for this competition through the Canada's Top 100 Employers application process. Employers complete a single application package for both competitions. Request an application.
